Meet the coach…
My name is Madyson Julien, and I am a Bahamian swimmer whose personal interest in swimming has shaped both my athletic journey and this project. I learned how to swim at three years old and have been a competitive swimmer for nearly thirteen years. Through long-term involvement in the sport, I have developed important personal skills such as self-discipline, perseverance, time management, and resilience, which have influenced both my performance in swimming and my approach to learning.
Throughout my career, I have represented The Bahamas at a competitive level as a CARIFTA swimmer, a three-time Goodwill Games swimmer, a Goodwill Games Team Captain and a national medalist. I also hold the Bahamas 9–10 girls 50 metre butterfly national record with a time of 32.25 seconds. These experiences allowed me to deepen my understanding of swimming technique, structured training, goal setting, and the importance of safety in aquatic environments.
As of 2025, I am a student at Lyford Cay International School and a member of the Lyford Cay Swim Team. Prior to this, I trained with the Barracuda Swim Club for most of my swimming career, where I built a strong foundation in competitive swimming and developed a passion for continuous improvement. Moving between teams has helped me adapt to different coaching styles and training environments, contributing to my growth as both an athlete and a learner.
As my experience in swimming increased, so did my desire to use my knowledge in a meaningful way. Living in The Bahamas, a country surrounded by water and often affected by hurricanes and flooding, has highlighted the importance of swimming as a life-saving skill. This awareness motivated me to create this project, as many drowning incidents occur simply because individuals do not have access to proper swim education.
The purpose of this project is to combine my personal interest in swimming with my learning goal of researching, designing, and creating an informative website that teaches the fundamentals of swimming while prioritising safety. Through Learn to Swim: A Coach’s Guide, I aim to support coaches, parents, and beginners by providing clear, structured guidance that can help children build confidence and essential skills in the water.
As both a competitive swimmer and an aspiring coach, this project represents my growth from athlete to educator. It reflects my commitment to using my skills and experiences to create a positive impact within my community and to contribute to a safer, more informed approach to swim education.
